What is the difference between shaping and sharpening?

Is there a difference  between shaping and sharpening?

  • We make a distinction between the shaping and sharpening (or re-sharpening) of a tool. When shaping you remove steel to achieve the shape and edge angle you want. When sharpening you just touch up an existing shape to renew the sharpness.

Once you have created the desired shape on the tool, for example a profiled turning gouge, with Tormek it is a quick job to re-sharpen it to exactly the same shape. The high level of control enabled by the jigs removes only a minimal amount of steel, making sharpening fast and at the same time you will get a very fine edge. Normally you will need to compromise between the two, fast sharpening or a fine edge.
