Sharpening an even edge near the handle

I’m having trouble getting an even edge in the inch closest to the handle.  The T8 has a two inch Thick wheel and I start at the handle and move toward the tip.  That first inch near the handle is never on the stone as long as the rest of the knife which causes uneven results.  If I grind near the handle longer I end up with the second inch from the handle concave. The end of the blade near the handle prevents me from passing over the stone like I do with the knife tip.   See the photo where the edge looks good but I couldn’t get that inch near the handle without overgriding the second inch. Thanks, Greg in California

The problem lies in the blade, you have also to grind away the first straight inch, otherwise you can't cut later. all the blade has to be straight and flat to the cutting board.
Mostly the blades are thicker in the part after the first inch, this gives an uneven edge. The only solution is to sharpen even all the way until the "stop". the second step would be to remove carfully the first inch flat on the stone.
Just remember if a part of the bevel is wider, the blade is thicker at that part, and not caused by your sharpening.
