Tormek BGM-100 / Mounting for Bench Grinder!

Hello Wolfgang: I am setting up a slow speed bench grinder exclusively for sharpening knives with Tormek jigs with the mounting instructions booklet setting measurements as given therein in the booklet.

Since most of the videos show the setups used for woodworking tools I would like to make sure if those are the same measurements recommended for setting the BGM-100 on a wooden base for sharpening knives or any adjustments to the setting measurements are suggested by Tormek?

Thank you and I have enjoyed your excellent videos on line!

  • Hej Aspen
If you use the measurements, the it works.
We don't recommend to use any jig for sharpening on a benchgrinder if the rotation is against the edge except it is a fixed jig on the Universalsupport and the position is quite high on the wheel. To get a catch with a not fixed jig is very dangerous.
Knife sharpening on a bench grinder, even slow has a high risk of heating up the edge wich results in a weak edge. Just keep also in mind that the machine motor isn't in the way and the stone protection isn't restricting your movement.

  • Thank you very much for your kind and early reply. Do appreciate it. I have reversed the rotation of the wheels opposite to what it came with so it is not directed at the knife's edge but flows away from it. I also am in the process of fixing the TOR-BGM 100 on a wooden platform as instructed in the booklet with measurements as recommended, and any sharpening will be, as you recommend, will be with a fixed Tormek jig.

Looking forward to work with the wonderful Tormek products.

Thanks again. Have a Blessed Day and To You and ALL AT TORMEK A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Best Wishes,
