Tormek 1200 Main Shaft
I have a Tormek 1200 (bought new), serial number 462193, probably more than 15 years old. The Grindstone (original with the machine when new) is seized to the shaft. I have tried penetrating fluid (WD40 Special Penetrating fluid) without success. Is my shaft made from Stainless Steel or carbon steel? Have you any advice about removing the stone to replace it? I recently bought a DE-200 diamond grindstone, but note that the bore of the DE-200 (12mm diameter) is smaller than the shaft on my machine (16mm diameter).

The older S-1200 models had plated carbon steel shafts. Unfortunately, they required some maintenance to hold up over the years.
Please try the following steps:
Spray some penetrating oil on the shaft and let it soak overnight.
To make this task easier, proceed as follows:
Remove the honing wheel.
Loosen the 12 mm nut and then remove the drive wheel.
Remove the locking pin from the shaft.
Pull out the shaft and grindstone as one unit.
Place the shaft (with the grindstone facing upward) in a vise. Be careful not to damage the main shaft at the bearing surfaces.
Tighten the vise and use a 19mm ring spanner. Hit the spanner with a hammer to get it loose. Remember that the old hexagonal nuts is right hand treaded.
When the nut is loose, open the vise slightly so the washer on the inside of the stone rests on the jaws of the vise.
Important: Do not let the jaws rest against the stone, as this can damage it.
The vise must rest against the inside washer only.
Apply penetrating oil again after the nut is removed.
Tap the shaft with a wooden or plastic hammer. This should loosen the shaft from the stone.
Remove any corrosion and re-grease the shaft before reinstalling it on the machine.
Good luck.
