Sharpening CPM420V
Dear Tormek Team,
I just recently bought a T-4 and am very pleased with it. After a few exercises on older knives, I am approaching my dear Mueller hunting knive which is made from CPM420V. If I remember correctly, Mr. Mueller said that only diamond stones could be used to sharpen that knife (and that in fact nobody but himself could properly do it without damaging the knife). I am confident enough to ignore the latter point but am not sure about the first. Would you agree that I need a different stone or would you say that I could get along with the SG-200?
Kind regards,
Max

After some research on the internet regarding the HRC of the CPM420V steel the aimed HRC is between 56-58 HRC. I found even milder ones. As always it depends how it is head treated.
I would say it would be possibel with the SG-200, You can try first carfully with dressing the surface of the stone with the SP-650 Stonegrader's fine side to a 1000 grid, just to see how it performs, you can easily rougehn the sones surfce too. It seems the steel is a bit wear resistant, that can make it a bit like "chewing gum" to sharpen, but should work. If the blade reists, You have alsways the possibility to go on a DF-200. Diamont cuts anyway every steel.
In very rare situations i needed a Diamond Wheel regarding the toughness of the steel, maybe it took a bit longer on the SG stone, but it worked.
