Hard rubber honing wheel on Tormek SA-250

The rubber is harsh and there is some thin scratches on its inner diameter.  Do I have to replace it ?  If yes, what is the best choice for sculpture and engraving tools ?

    After more than 30 years, it is normal for the rubber honing wheel to become hard and rough, and fine surface cracks do not necessarily mean that it must be replaced. You can first try lightly abrading the surface with coarse sandpaper to remove the hardened outer layer. There may still be softer rubber underneath.

    Replace the wheel if the cracks are deep, pieces are coming loose, the wheel no longer runs evenly, or the surface remains hard after dressing.

    For an upgrade, you can choose between the LA-220 Leather Honing Wheel and the CW-220 Composite Honing Wheel. The LA-220 Leather Honing Wheel is the more traditional and versatile choice for woodcarving and engraving tools. For curved and profiled tools, the LA-120 Profiled Leather Honing Wheel can also be a useful addition. The CW-220 Composite Honing Wheel is the modern alternative that is most similar to the original rubber honing wheel, so it may feel more familiar if you are accustomed to that type of honing.

    Please note that the original drive wheel must also be replaced before a new honing wheel can be fitted. You can find the correct drive wheel for the Tormek SA-250 here.
