Power loss on SuperGrind 2000

I have an old Tormek SuperGrind 2000 and have been very happy with it.  Lately, it seems like it is losing power when I sharpen items, often not be able to turn the wheel, even with only light pressure involved.  Is there a way to remedy this?  Does the motor need replacing?  Any help would be appreciated

  • Hi Dough.

There are two things that can happen on an older machine like a S-2000.
The most common thing is that the rubber on the drive wheel is dirty or has hardened over time. The motor shaft is slipping against the rubber.
The other thing is the capacitor that can go down after 20-25 years. A capacitor ages and have a lifespan for approximately 25 years.
You can determine what the problem is by removing the honing wheel so you get access to the drive wheel and can see the motor shaft that runs against the rubber friction ring.
If you start the machine and put some pressure on the stone so the machine stops. If the motor shaft also stops it can be the capacitor that is broken. The motor is weak.
But if the motor shaft still runs (slips) you have to refresh the rubber on the drive wheel.
This you can do by first clean the motor shaft with solvent. Then use an emery cloth or sandpaper to roughen up the surface. It's easy to do by starting the machine and hold the emery cloth against the rubber friction ring. When the whole surface is roughened up and clean the machine will be strong again.

    Good luck.
