Can I refresh / dress the SP-650 Stone Grader?

The rough side of the grading stone (SP-650 Stone Grader) for my T-8 seems to be glazing over. Is this normal? Is there a way to dress it?

  • Hej Kevin,
if you are mainly using the flat side of the stone grader it might become clogged with abrasion from the grinding stones. This is normal as you are taking away material from the stone every time you use it. Our recommendation is to use the stone grader mainly or often on the corners and apply quite some pressure. You can for example have a look at this video where Wolfgang from Tormek explains how to use the SP-650 stone grader: https://www.youtube.com/live/R2ifZQOJA7k?feature=share&t=577

  • Hello Tormek Team!

Tanja, I had the same question regarding flattening/dressing the SP-650. I watch Wolfgang use the stone and have and have since adapted his style for using the SP-650.

But I have areas on the stone that are not flat - improper use of SP-650 before watching Wolfgang. So can you answer if I can use a diamond plate or other method to flatten the SP-650 or do I have to buy a new one?

    Thank you

  • Hi John,
    Thank you for your question.

It's not necessary to have a completely flat surface of the SP-650 Stone Grader. It should still be able to do its job and grade the grindstone just fine, as long as you move the stone grader across the surface of the spinning grindstone.

The SP-650 Stone Grader should be seen as a consumable with a relatively long lifetime. If you experience that it is too uneven or the surface has been glazed we would recommend you to get a new one.

    Hope this will help you.
    Stay sharp!
    Victor
